Why there's an age gate

Night Cap shows information about bars, breweries, and other venues that serve alcohol. Because of that, you must confirm you are 21 years of age or older — the legal purchase age set by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control — before you can use the app. This is shown as a one-question prompt ("Are you 21 or older?") the first time you visit.

How it works

You self-certify your age by clicking Yes, I'm 21+. The app does not verify your date of birth, government ID, or any other proof of age.
If you click No, you're blocked from viewing the app's content.
Your answer is remembered for your current browser session only, in the same lightweight, non-tracking way described in our Privacy Policy — it is not tied to your identity and is not shared with any third party.

What this is — and isn't

This is a self-certification, click-through age gate — the same type of "age affirmation" mechanism described in the beverage-alcohol industry's own self-regulatory guidance, the DISCUS Code, which recognizes an age-affirmation page as an accepted way for alcohol-related digital content to confirm a legal-purchase-age audience. It is a good-faith deterrent and a standard industry practice, but it does not verify age in any legally binding sense — someone under 21 could click through it. It should not be relied on as a substitute for real age verification (ID check, third-party verification service, etc.) anywhere that level of assurance is legally required.

Our commitment

We built this gate because the subject matter (alcohol-serving venues) makes it appropriate, and because it's consistent with how most nightlife-adjacent apps and sites handle this. We do not knowingly direct this app's content at anyone under 21, and we ask everyone using it to answer honestly.
